Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Margins crenate–serrate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in solitary or in axillary fascicles, pedicels with 2(3) persistent bracteoles. Flowers unisexual (and the plants dioecious or rarely monoecious). Calyx of 5 sepals, slightly unequal. Corolla of 5(–7) petals; petals distinct or connate at base. Stamens 5–30, in a single series, staminodes present in pistillate flowers; filaments coherent at base, ± adnate to petals; anthers basifixed. Ovary superior, 2–6-carpellate; ovules 4–60 per cell; styles 2–6, connate at base or nearly distinct.

Fruit: Berries fleshy or dry. Seeds numerous; not winged; endosperm present.
